Peach Blossom Pastry


  1. red bean paste* (250 g/ 9 oz)

  2. all-purpose flour (120g/1cup)

  3. cake flour (120 g /1 cup)

  4. water (50g / 4 tbsp)

  5. white sugar (25 g /2.5 tbsp)

  6. food color (Red) (0.1 oz = 3 ml)

  7. lard 100 g (can be replaced with 1 stick butter). Divide into 40g / 3 tbsp, 60g/ 5 tbsp.

  8. 1 egg yolk

  9. 1 tsp white sesame seeds

* You could buy it from most Asian groceries. Alternatively, you could buy canned Aduki beans, and blend it into a paste. Then, heat it with sugar and vegetable oil in a saucepan with low heat for 30 minutes. The ratio of bean, sugar, and oil is recommended10:1:2.

  1. Make the dough: combine all-purpose flour, lard/butter, and water. Mix well. Set it aside for 30 minutes, while covering with plastic paper to keep it moist.

  2. Make the skin: combine cake flour, lard/butter, food color. Mix well. Set it aside for 30 minutes, while covering with plastic paper to keep it moist.

  3. Meanwhile, evenly divide red bean paste into 12 pieces. Roll it into a ball shape.

  4. After 30 minutes, divide dough and skin divide into 12 pieces. Roll them into a ball shape.

Prepare for making flowers (15 minutes; if set it aside as instructed for the best results, 30 more minutes):

  1. Take a piece of skin, press it, and roll it into a thin round layer.

  2. Put a piece of dough on the skin, and close the open.

  3. Press it and roll it into a thin long layer.

  4. Roll it up from the bottom to the top.

  5. Set it aside while covering with plastic paper for 15 minutes (optional) .

  6. Repeat 1-5. The purpose is to make layers in the dough.

  7. Press it using your figure from the middle.

  8. Pull it together from the two sides and squeeze it.

  9. Press it using your hands.

  10. Roll it into a thin round shape.

  11. Place a piece of red bean paste into the middle. Close the open.

  12. Press it and roll it into a pancake shape. 0.5 inches thick and 3 inches in diameter.

  13. Repeat until finish all the pieces.

Make flowers (15 minutes):

  1. Cut it into 6 pieces of petals. Be careful not to break it in the middle.

  2. Use your figure to make petal shapes.

  3. Use a knife to gently make two lines in each petal.

  4. Use a folk to add a drop of egg yolk in the middle of the flower, and then add a few while season seeds.

  5. Repeat it for the rest.

Bake it up (30 minutes):

  1. pre-heat oven to 330 F Degree.

  2. Bake it for 25-30 minutes. Cover with a foil for the last 10 minutes to prevent the top becomes yellow.

Cooking time: 1.5 h

Yields: 12 flowers
